You are chosen... I don't know if you ever had the experience of being the last kid chosen for a team. And then , only being on the team, not because you were chosen, but because you the only one left and the captain had no other choice. I'm not sure if you ever experienced the collective groans of the other members of the team as you made your way over to their side. I don't know if that was ever your experience, but it was definitely one of mine for the majority of my primary and high school years. I still remember the anxiety of waiting to be 'chosen', knowing I would be last. I remember holding back tears. I remember pretending to be sick on PE days so I could avoid the humiliation and that feeling of being alone. Of being unwanted.
Everyone wants to be chosen. Wanted. It's part of who we are.
Here's the good news. Jesus chose you. This verse says, 'You didn't choose me, I chose you.' So often we think we 'choose' Jesus, but the truth is, He chose you, long before the world began. He chose you, set you apart to be His own, and he has spent your whole life wooing you and calling you to himself. Sometimes, He uses a soft whisper. Sometimes he speaks a little louder. But always calling, always drawing you close. You were not the last one left, not the consolation prize. You were always his first choice. You are loved with an everlasting love. (Jer 31.3)
