Delight Yourself In The Lord

Updated: Jan 27, 2020

"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Psalm 37:4

I had a new understanding of this verse awhile ago. So often we read this verse to mean, 'delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you everything you want.' But just think for a minute about what you do when you really delight in something.

You spend a lot of time thinking about, being with, doing, that thing. It takes up all your thoughts. You want to be with, or be doing something with, whatever it is that you delight in- it becomes the desire of your heart. You spend your days thinking about it, spending all your free time either with the thing you’re delighting in, or wishing you were.

So now, put that in the context of this verse...the more you delight in The Lord, the more He becomes the desire of your heart and the more of himself He gives you. It just goes around in a circle. How easy for Him to give you more of himself. The more we delight in Him, the more He gives of himself and the more He becomes the desire of our heart. He becomes all we want. All we need. More of Him and His peace and His presence and all the overflowing blessing that is poured out of that.

What more could we want? Delight yourself in the Lord.
